NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

We’ve gotten through eight weeks of the NFL. We’ve seen the lucky teams fade away, and watched the hyped teams disappoint.

At this point, we know enough to get a good understanding of who’s who in the NFL, and what their outlook is for the second half.

1. Green Bay Packers

Outlook: “The king stay the king.”

If you don’t watch The Wire, then that sucks for you, but that famous quote from season one should apply to the Packers all season. They’re the only consistent team in the NFL, and will likely stay that way through the end.

Aaron Rodgers isn’t just pretending he wears the belt. It’s actually there.


2. San Francisco 49ers

Outlook: Up and up

You can’t deny Jim Harbaugh and the Niners anymore, and with two week teams coming up, you might not have to until they travel to Baltimore in Week 12.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

Outlook: Slipping

They needed that win over New England, as well as the respect of finally beating a playoff contender. But they have a tough one coming up against division rival Baltimore, who walked all over them in Week 2.

4. New England Patriots

Outlook: Back to business

Tom Brady is still Tom Brady, but that defense couldn’t hang with some college football offenses. They get a big rebound game in their first rematch with the Giants since the biggest upset in NFL history (Super Bowl XLII). Throw in the fact that they need to redeem the loss to the Steelers, as well as Bill Belichick’s 8-2 record in games following a bye week since he started wearing the Patriots sweatshirt in 2002, and the Pats could move back up pretty soon.

5. Detroit Lions

Outlook: Healing

Everyone thought they were seeing the Lions turn back into the Lions we remember after those back-to-back losses San Francisco and Atlanta. But last week’s blowout win over Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos gives them a lot of confidence going into a bye week, during which running back Jahvid Best got some time to recover from lingering concussion issues.


6. New Orleans Saints

Outlook: Redemption

That St. Louis game was ugly. There’s no other way to describe it. But it was a fluke. They’ll make up for it in a big upcoming divisional game against the injured Buccaneers, if they’re defense can show their faces on the field again.

7. Buffalo Bills

Outlook: Slipping

Who would have thought the Buffalo Bills would lead the AFC East halfway through the season? The shutout was nice, but it came against the Washington Replacements.

The hot start is a nice story, and one worth $59 million for quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, but we’ll be able to see a lot more about them after they play the Jets for the first time next week.

8. Baltimore Ravens

Outlook: Up and up

Sure, a little bit of a scare after tanking one to the Jaguars and getting off to a slow start against the Cardinals. But the Ravens have shown they only lose to bad teams, and only really beat good ones. They have an upcoming chance to sweep the season series with the Steelers for only the second time in franchise history. I don’t think they’ll forget to show up this week.

9. Houston Texans

Outlook: Up and up

Andre Johnson is back, and so is Arian Foster, in a way. Houston can be dangerous when they want to be, and after missing four weeks, dangerous is exactly what Johnson will want to be.

10. Chicago Bears

Outlook: Slipping

They’ve shown a little toughness in a couple big games this year - against Atlanta, Carolina, and Tampa Bay - but opposing teams have scored a lot of points on them this year and Jay Cutler turns the ball over way too often to make it far this season.

Expect to see the Bears fall further behind the Lions and Packers in the division when Mike Vick, Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson show up to exploit their 28th-ranked pass defense.

11. New York Jets

Outlook: Do or die

The Jets need to do something to prove their worth any of the big words they throw around. The AFC playoff race is getting crowded, and they could find themselves on the outside looking in if they can’t learn how to beat a good team.

A win over the division-leading Buffalo Bills next week would put them right back in it. But a loss could set them too far behind to ever catch up.

12. Atlanta Falcons

Outlook: Up and up

For a 13-3 team, the Falcons had a lot of doubters going into the 2011 season. At first, it seemed like those doubters had it right.

But a couple of big wins and some injuries to their division rivals have put the Falcons back in it. Not to mention the gimme game they have coming up against the Indianapolis Colts.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Outlook: Slipping

Too many injuries in Tampa Bay to get past, especially for a team being led by guys in their early 20s. Now, on offense, they have no running back and a tight end who has admitted he’s playing on one leg. It’s too much for Josh Freeman to get through, and it could mean the end of their playoff hopes.

14. Cincinnati Bengals

Outlook: Unfortunate

The league’s second biggest surprise behind the Buffalo Bills, the Bengals simply won’t be able to slug it out with the Ravens and the Steelers. If only they could switch to the NFC West.

15. San Diego Chargers

Outlook: Flat-out disappointing

Philip Rivers botched the application for his acceptance into the elite quarterbacks club, and he dragged the whole team down with him. They could win the division, but only because everyone else in the division has been cut down by injury. After that, though, they’ll probably fade away in the playoffs.

16.  Philadelphia Eagles

Outlook: U-turn

The Eagles opened the season as the NFL’s biggest joke. Luckily for them, they got that out of the way early on. They’re starting to play like a consistent football team, and they have too much talent to deny. And, everyone knows, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

17. New York Giants

Outlook: Misleading

The Giants are 5-2 and lead the NFC East by two games. But if you look deeper, they’re 5-0 against teams with a combined record of 10-18, and got both of their losses at the hands of two of the biggest joke teams in the NFL - the Seahawks and the Redskins. Oh, and last week, they had to come from behind to beat Matt Moore and the Miami Dolphins.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

18. Kansas City Chiefs

Outlook: Confusing

Where did all this come from? A four-game win streak and an average of more than 25 points per game, all coming after starting running back Jamaal Charles went down for the season with a torn ACL? This is the same team that lost its first two games with a combined score of 89-10.

They have a chance to take advantage of a soft division, but they won’t keep this streak alive for long. Three of the four teams they’ve beaten have been weak, from the Donovan McNabb version of the Minnesota Vikings to the Curtis Painter version of the Indianapolis Colts to the Kyle Boller version of the Oakland Raiders.

19. Dallas Cowboys


Outlook: More of the same

Maybe it’s just Tony Romo, but for some reason the Cowboys are always the team that blows it late. Their first three losses came by a combined total of 11 points. Now they have to try to turn their luck around after getting embarrassed 34-7 by division rival Philadelphia Eagles. Once again, it looks like it’s going to be too little, too late for the Cowboys.

20. Oakland Raiders

Outlook: Hopeful

They have the parts to be a good team, they just need to make sure those parts stay glued together. Carson Palmer is coming off a bye week after rushing into his first NFL start since last January. If he can remember how to play like he did in 05, and if Darren McFadden can keep his ankle healthy for a full season, the Raiders are comeback-team material.

21. Carolina Panthers

Outlook: Team of the future

Halfway through the season, he’s proven that it hasn’t been a fluke. Cam Newton is the best rookie quarterback since Peyton Manning, and has the potential to be the best rookie quarterback ever.

He’s gotten better even as the teams he’s played have learned more about him, and he hasn’t thrown an interception in two weeks. So far, we’ve seen Newton lead the Panthers into some close situations, only to watch other parts to fall apart at the last second (Olindo Mare still owes me $200 for missing that 31-yard field goal last week).

With Newton playing at this level, the Panthers have to be the happiest 2-6 team in the history of the NFL.

22. Tennessee Titans

Outlook: Coming back down to Earth

The Titans have been scavengers all year, picking wins off of the weak teams they’ve come across, and building some fake confidence after getting a fluke win over Baltimore in Week 2. A tough schedule coming up - Bengals, Panthers, Falcons, Buccaneers, Bills and Saints, consecutively - should show us who the real Tennessee Titans are.

23. Minnesota Vikings

Outlook: Hopeful

At this point, the season is over for the Vikings. All they can hope for is their first-round draft pick Christian Ponder to get some experience to carry into next year. So far, he’s done exactly that, and he could make them an NFC North contender in the next few years.

24. Cleveland Browns

Outlook: Boring

Remember that Seattle game? Yeah, I was trying to forget it too.

The Madden Curse put the weight of an injured Peyton Hillis on the shoulders of second-year quarterback Colt McCoy, and it has turned out to be nothing fun to watch. They’ll float around in the bottom of the league for the rest of the year.

25. Jacksonville Jaguars

Outlook: Miserable

If the Browns are boring, then the Jaguars are like watching C-SPAN. Sure, they have a good defense, but rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert has been so bad this year that every team they play can put 11 guys on Maurice Jones-Drew, taking away the only guy worth watching in Jacksonville.

26. Arizona Cardinals

Outlook: Failed experiment

Time for something new under center, because Kevin Kolb didn’t work out. And it’s too bad, because he’s neglecting us of some quality Larry Fitzgerald highlight-reel potential.

27. Denver Broncos

Outlook: Tebowing

Tebowing is not a compliment. His true colors showed when the Broncos lost 45-10 to the Detroit Lions. With upcoming games against the Raiders, Chiefs and Jets, fans in Denver might start putting up billboards asking for Brady Quinn before the season is over.

28. Seattle Seahawks

Outlook: Not sure

Their outlook will be a little clearer once head coach Pete Carroll can figure out who’s going to play quarterback (in case you missed it, on Sunday against the Bengals he announced Tarvaris Jackson would start, then let Charlie Whitehurst start, then changed his mind again and subbed in Jackson). Maybe he thought the first eight weeks were still part of the pre-season

29. St. Louis Rams

Outlook: Better luck next year

Their hopes were knocked out alongside starting quarterback Sam Bradford. At least they got their 15 minutes with that surprise blow-out win over the New Orleans Saints. That, and another high draft pick that will only add to Bradford’s arsenal. 2012 should be a little more enjoyable for the Rams.

30. Washington Redskins

Outlook: Crippled

Even after replacing one bad quarterback with another, the Redskins outlook actually got worse when all of their top skill players fell to injury. The 3-1 start was cute, but we all expected the real Redskins to take over at some point.

31. Miami Dolphins

Outlook: Suck for Luck

Even though the players don’t like that the fans want them to, they haven’t done anything to show that they won’t suck. Good Luck (get it?) surviving in a locker room after joining a team like that.

32. Indianapolis Colts

Outlook: Winless (for the foreseeable future)
