NFL Week 8 Recap: Cincinnati Bengals Win Again, Stay Alive in AFC North Battle

The AFC North is starting to get a little crowded.

Everyone expected the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens to battle it out for the division. But the Cincinnati Bengals weren’t supposed to be a part of it. They were supposed to be a rebuilding team that gave two easy wins to the Ravens and Steelers. With a rookie at starting quarterback and their star player retiring to New England, the Bengals were supposed to be a non-threat.

The problem is, the Bengals didn’t listen to all that. Through the halfway point of the season, Cincinnati stands at 5-2. That’s the same record as the Baltimore Ravens and the New England Patriots. It’s just a half game behind the Pittsburgh Steelers, which is the difference keeping the AFC North lead from being a three-way tie right now. If the Bengals are supposed to fade away, it looks like they don’t plan on starting yet.

Cincinnati beat up on the Seatlle Seahawks today, scoring in three different ways: through the air, on a punt return and off of a Tarvaris Jackson interception. A.J. Green, who has become rookie quarterback Andy Dalton’s favorite target, was thrown at 10 times in the game. He turned that into a four-catch, 63-yard performance, with his 43-yard reception going for the Bengals’ second score.

After this, Cincinnati has a good chance at improving their record even further, traveling to Tennessee to take on an overrated Titans squad.

The Seahawks, though, are stuck in a rut without a quarterback. Tavaris Jackson couldn’t get his team to score more than 12 points even when he throws for 323 yards. They have all the other pieces - Sidney Rice, Marshawn Lynch and Leon Washington - but the Seahawks won’t go far without a good quarterback there to tie them all together.

NFL Week 8 Recap: Frank Gore Moves Closer to History, Carries 49ers to Win

Running back Frank Gore once again carried the San Francisco 49ers to victory, with a 20-to-10 win over the struggling Cleveland Browns pushing their win streak to five games.

Gore racked up 134 rushing yards and a touchdown, marking his fourth consecutive game with at least 125 rushing yards and a touchdown. The last time he failed to do that was Week 3 against the Bengals, the NFL’s fifth-ranked defense. The recent surge put Gore in the No. 2 spot in 49ers rushing history, passing Roger Craig during today’s game. Craig has called Gore “the new king” in San Francisco, and, like everyone else, expects him to take over first place later this year. Joe Perry is the only one standing in his way, and he recorded just 256 yards more than Gore has racked up so far.

Gore’s extra efforts have been a key part of San Francisco’s win streak, as Alex Smith has now thrown for fewer than 200 yards in three consecutive games. But with a stud in the backfield, the quarterback usually doesn’t need to be much more than efficient, and that’s exactly what Smith has been. Through eight weeks, Smith has completed 63.9 percent of his passes and has thrown only two interceptions.

Smith also got big-play weapon Braylon Edwards added to the lineup today, and targeted him seven times. Edwards’ presence could open up more opportunities for Michael Crabtree, who had a touchdown today, and could very well open Smith’s passing options when opposing teams stack the box to contain Gore.

Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy out-performed Smith, throwing for 241 yards on 22 of 34 passing, but also threw an interception. And unlike Smith, McCoy didn’t have much relief from the running game to take the pressure off of him. Cleveland is still struggling to fill the void left by Peyton Hillis’ injury, which is partially the result of his physical running style and partially the result of the Madden curse (it’s like a science lately). In this week’s edition of the Browns offense without Hillis, Chris Ogbonnaya led the way after the initial replacement, Montario Hardesty, left the game with a calf injury. Ogbonnaya could only gain 37 yards on 11 carries, but also caught five passes for another 24 yards.

The Browns, who have lost three of their last four, face another tough matchup in Houston next week, and with all three other teams in their division winning today they can pretty much rule out any chance of making the playoffs.

The Niners, meanwhile, have a pretty good chance to keep the league’s second-longest winning streak alive when they travel to Washington next Sunday.

You have to hand it to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In their first real challenge of the season, they pulled off a smart game plan to take down Tom Brady and get a big win over the New England Patriots.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin realized that there is one sure way to stop Tom Brady from taking over a game - keep him out of it. Anyone who’s watched Brady, Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski and the rest of the Patriots’ offense operate at its best knows that they go by a certain rhythm. A prime example was the Patriots’ last game against the Dallas Cowboys, in which Brady orchestrated an almost perfect game-winning drive by alternating through wide receivers and executing their plays quickly, efficiently, and on their own terms.

Pittsburgh’s offensive game plan involved burning the time Brady would otherwise use on offense. And it worked, with the Steelers holding the ball for 40 minutes of the game, compared to the Patriots’ 20. By moving the ball down the field with a short passing game, which was supplemented by an effective ground effort from Rashard Mendenhall (70 yards on 13 carries), the Steelers kept the fast-moving Patriots offense off the field and out of rhythm.

Ben Roethlisberger’s short-passing game added up to big numbers: 365 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 36 of 50 passing. For Brady, it made for the Patriots’ worst offensive outing since the Cleveland Browns held them to 14 points in November of last year. Brady was held to 198 yards on 24 of 35 passing. He did have two touchdowns, but that was primarily because the run game, which was so important against a tough Steelers defense, didn’t show up to punch the ball in. The Patriots rushed the ball just 12 times the entire game, limiting Benjarvus Green-Ellis to five carries for a whopping nine yards. Veteran Kevin Faulk made the best of his limited participation in his first game back since tearing his ACL last September, but still gained only 32 yards on six rushes.

And while the pundits and analysts will discuss the call on that pass play to tight end Ron Gronkowski, which may have been a missed touchdown, it’s not really what cost the Patriots the game. Neither was Bill Belichick’s decision to run another play rather than challenge the call, nor the ugly onside kick attempt. The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Patriots straight up by keeping them from using their best weapon.

And now, with a win against a top team on their record, the Steelers are welcomed into the group of elite NFL teams, at least for now.

Queens son Mike Scala announced his campaign to seek the Democratic nomination to represent New York's 6th district in Congress. Family and friends attended the announcement at Once Upon A Time in Jamaica, Queens. On Tuesday, November 1, 2011, the Scala for Congress campaign will broadcast that announcement online at Livestream.com/ScalaforCongress starting at 8 PM EST. Scala will be live in the accompanying chatroom for an open discussion until 9 PM EST.

Mike Scala's campaign espouses the message that those on the ground level have better perspective than the establishment: "With over 8% of Americans unemployed, now is the time to demand stronger leadership. Strengthening essential programs on which everyday Americans rely, investing in our infrastructure, and improving our educational system must be prioritized over needless wars and tax spending on the wealthy. To put it simply, President Obama needs more support from his own party to enact the changes promised by his election."
