DJ Zeke: On The Road To Being Famous

Ezekiel Akinyemi a.k.a DJ Zeke from afar has to be the hardest working DJ from Queens. The man on some days deejays multiple events and parties a day, hosts mixtapes, and still keeps his phone line open just in case more events come up all the while plotting his next career move. The 27 year old DJ was born in Staten Island and was raised in the Parkhill projects until he moved to Queens Village right before high school.


“My family is from Lagos, Nigeria and I am the first generation born in America” says Zeke. Like many people, Zeke got his start in music through the church. “I used to sing in my choir so my aunt moved me to the soundboard at the time I didn’t know it was because I couldn’t sing” says Zeke. So from there I started learning the board and eventually moved in to deejaying" says Zeke.


It was then DJ Zeke was born and started his journey deejaying at his high school even doing so at his own prom. Zeke says he caters to all audiences whether they are Spanish, Indian as long as they are paying he is there. After high school DJ Zeke started making his rounds while attending St. John’s University he met DJ Spynfo (Currently on Hot 97).


“He was the big DJ on campus and when he graduated I took over the whole school” says Zeke.


From St. John’s University, DJ Zeke started branching out to other different schools and that’s where he has been building his name as well as his crew the College Club Kings which include DJ Spynfo, DJ Wallah, DJ Monumental, DJ Spider and DJ Sparkx. It was at St. John’s University also that Zeke met fellow alum and current hip hop sensation J. Cole where they built a friendship that lasts even today.


“That’s the homie anytime he is in town, I check him” says Zeke. Last time he was here we went to Mr. Chow. It felt like the whole St. John’s crew kicked it. It’s still love and we still family even though he is in a different space, I was in the workout video” says Zeke.


His travels in the industry have taken him to radio where he has dabbled but what he really wants is television. “I used to do radio heavy and it was cool just to learn it but what I really want to do is television” says Zeke. Radio is where you get known and television is where you get famous. I would love to do something on MTV and hit a broader audience” says Zeke.


Meanwhile as Zeke racks up the parties and corporate events for companies like NAACP, Addidas, and Beats By Dre and attention from publications like Hip Hop Weekly he is not without his haters. "The industry is a funny place" says Zeke. "I don’t really care about it. Some people in radio are trying to shit on my life. I don’t really care for them but there are some people who you do meet and make that connection with" says Zeke.


As for Zeke, he sees his future being in television and deejaying. "I have been doing a lot of concerts with artists like Kendrick Lamar and I got one coming up with Pusha T that Lowkey and 2DopeBoyz are hosting" says Zeke. Zeke is also working on going to Trinidad with Care Free Nation.


"They are how I got to DJ for Nas and Damian Marley and Drake" says Zeke.


According to DJ Zeke, the perception of him and who really is maybe skewed and it’s something he would like to clear up.


“A lot of people think I’m unapproachable” says Zeke. “I’m in the fishbowl just getting my food. I’m a humble dude and people can approach me. It’s difficult for me even to have a shorty because of the game I’m in and having a relationship takes time. If I wasn’t getting gigs, people wouldn’t hate. So stop assuming because what you see is what you see. I’m just blessed and I know God is going to continue blessing me” says Zeke.
