Ne-Yo hosts 2011 Compound Foundation Benefit; Tony Shellman, Selita Ebanks honored

The Source Magazine was invited to Ne-Yo's 2nd Annual Compound Foundation Benefit, which took place in the home of Songwriter and Philanthropist Denise Rich. Super Model and Actress Selita Ebanks and Fashion Innovator/National Foster Care Month Spokesperson Tony Shellman were honored. $150,000 was raised on this evening and a lot of heavy-hitters and celebrities were in attendance including Serena Williams, Corinne Bailey Rae, Rico Love's Artist Sofi Green, Angela Simmons, rapper Brittany Smooch, Terrence from 106 & Park, music Executive Kevin Liles and BET’s President of Music Programming and Specials, Stephen G. Hill to name a few. Ne-Yo's mom, Loraine Smith, who is on the board of directors opened the evening by saying how proud she is of her son Ne-Yo and his work with the foundation. She became emotional. 



Ne-Yo told The Source, that he decided to found The Compound Foundation, because a lot of his staff members grew up in foster homes and group homes. "Well, we founded the Compound Foundation in 2007 and our focus is foster children, I feel like you know being a foster kid, these kids without the proper guidance feel like their circumstance limits them to what they can do in life and the Compound Foundation is basically all about letting these kids know that regardless of where you're from, regardless of who raised you, you know as long as there's love and as long as there's determination there, you can be anything you want to be so that's our goal, that's our focus," Ne-Yo said. 


 Ne-Yo is currently working on his 5th Studio album. He told us to look out for it early 2012. Thus far his has collaborated with No i.D., Salaam Remy, The Stereotypes and the production front. He is writing all of the songs on his album. When asked if he might re-collaborate with Afrojack, Ne-Yo said that it is definitely a possibility. 


Fashion Mogul Tony Shellman is best known for founding clothing brands Enyce, Mecca and Parish. "I was in foster care myself, and so being an inspiration and being an honoree has been my big piece and then you know helping out with different events and coming and speaking to the kids for them, after doing the project Mecca, Enyce and Parish you know them seeing I don't play basketball, I don't write records but you know I've been able to sell a couple of companies for a couple hundred million, do alright myself, so with that when you see me in my jeans and my t-shirt, you're like huh?, so its good for kids to see themselves in a role they would never expect from--I produced it, I managed it, so that's what my thing is--to be an inspiration and share that success and coming out of foster care and say "hey look! you matter too!" you know take that label off let's go be great entrepreneurs," Tony Shellman told The Source.


Selita Ebanks was in the foster care system for under a year when she was 6 years old. "This is something really big for me because I have never been honored for something like this before and it's personal for me because I too was in foster care at a very young age, so I was one of the children lost or could of been lost. Thank God my mother and family was there." Selita told The Source, that her mother was a young mother of four from the Cayman Islands, who as dyslexic. Her mother had her own struggles and turned the system for help. Selita says it was "one the scariest times in my life." She went through six or seven families and can definitely empathize with foster kids. She currently works with the charity New Yorkers for children because there are 14-17,000 kids in New York who are in foster care. 


Denise Rich who graciously co-hosted the evening was very proud of Ne-Yo's work with The Compound Foundation. Ne-Yo "encourages entrepreneurship, tries to get them to the next level and it's such a wonderful thing to see someone so young giving back to his community and giving back to the people and caring about something other than himself he's really caring about the kids with all his heart."


Ne-Yo will be going on a giving tour this fall in four cities and the Simmons Sisters will also be helping him again.
