Last month, Jennifer Hudson, Aretha Franklin,  attended the Thelonious Monk 25thAnniversary Gala Concert and Party. The evening, made possible by major sponsor Cadillac, focused on the importance of jazz education and featured performances by a number of jazz greats, including Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson and Herbie Hancock. Jennifer Hudson, who looked amazing in a blue dress, danced and jammed backstage to the Aretha Franklin tribute.  She surprised everyone on stage with a performance of “Oh Me Oh My.” When someone asked her who should play in the movie about her life, Aretha Franklin announced confidently that she thought Halle Berry was the perfect choice. During the Aretha Franklin tribute, a who’s who of jazz greats (including Chaka Kahn, Kurt Elling, Dee Bridgewater, Kevin Eubanks, Diane Reeves, among others) changed the words from “cause you make me feel” to “Hail to the queen… Hail to the queen… cause you are a phenomenal woman,” which sent the crowd wild. The recipient of the 2011 Jazz Competition award was Kris Bowers, a Julliard student, who received $25,000 and a recording contract from Concord Music Group.

Guests including Mark Zuckerberg enjoyed a memorable evening with performances by The Killers, Jane's Addiction, Snoop Dogg and Kaskade. Key music VIPs including Parker, Spotify's Daniel Ek and industry manager Paul Rosenberg held a panel that discussed the future of music and impact of social media.

Brooklyn Bodega, producers of the annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, are excited to announce that the Red Bull EmSee Challenge is stopping in Boston as part of their continued search of the country's best freestyle MC.

Red Bull EmSee is an invitation-only battle series designed to find the best freestyle rappers in the country and give them a national platform to show their skills and earn acclaim. This year's eight-city tour stops in Boston at Royale with The Trill OG: Bun B playing master of ceremonies. Considered one of the most influential and skilled emcees of all time, Rakim alongside Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae will be doing double duty and judges and performers. The winner of the Boston qualifier will advance to the finals in Atlanta this fall where he'll vie for the national championship and an opportunity to record with a headlining producer of his choice. 

Other East Coast MC's will have one more chance to represent on the mic when the Red Bull EmSee tour hits DC later in Oct.

VIDEO: Aasim's "Never"

I dig artists who are laid back with minimal arrogance. Aasim is sort of that guy. At least in this vid for "Never" he comes off as nonchalant and likable. It's true that his flow seems natural and conversational. Heck, the video is framed as if he's just talking to the camera. And although the vid sometimes tries too hard by sampling nearly every video effect that exists, Aasim is just the opposite; that's the impression that I got. Still the vid does get cool points for simplicity.


This track has nice beats and a catchy hook too. Trying to figure out who's on the sample; the sample has that old school vibe. It all just fits together organically. Kinda anxious to hear the rest of the mixtape, "Money Pit 3."

Oh, and love the lyrics: folks will do a number of things to get elevated in the game but never really ascend. Actually, the end of the vid sums it up quite nicely when he says "it's too easy." But you need to hear and see the vid to know why he can say that and mean it.
