World Series Preview: Why Watch?

We got kind of ripped off for the World Series this year.


We could be watching the Milwaukee Brewers and the Detroit Tigers. Who wouldn’t want to see that? Justin Verlander, the first pitcher to get MVP considerations since Dennis “The Best Mustache in Broadcasting” Eckersley, could be starting Game One. The Milwaukee Brewers could have played in their second World Series ever, and their first since 1982, one year before their ace Zach Greinke was born.


Instead, we get to see the Texas Rangers, a team owned by the Bush family which lost the World Series in five games just last year, and the St. Louis Cardinals, who just won it in 2006. Yawn.


Well, we have a few things to look forward to.


Albert Pujols


A no-brainer. Pujols is a baseball hard ass. He walks up to the plate knowing he’s going to tear shit up.


Let me put it this way: He finished the regular season with 37 homeruns, 99 RBIs, a .299 batting average, and a .907 slugging percentage. And that’s on a down year.


He’s one of the few baseball players who, in the post steroids era, can step into the batter's box with the swagger of a legitimate slugger. Speaking of which...


Nelson Cruz


A walk-off grand slam in the ALCS. Talk about swagger. It was the first time anyone has hit a walk-off grand slam in the playoffs. That milestone waited hundreds of years for Nelson Cruz to knock it out.


This Rangers lineup is pretty stacked as it is, so we’ll get to see if Cruz can do it again on an even bigger stage.


C.J. Wilson/Chris Carpenter in Game One


Chris Carpenter has been around the block, and C.J. Wilson has just arrived. Classic case of a career that is burning out vs. one that is taking off.


Personally, I’m pulling for Wilson. The guy deserves it. Plus, Carpenter already has a ring.


Tony La Russa/Ron Washington


Similar to the Carpenter/Wilson matchup, except between two completely different styles.


They’re both old-school baseball guys, but operate entirely differently. One rules with an iron fist and the other gets down with his players. One is tight-lipped with the press while the other has fun with it. One is looking to go out on a high note while the other is trying to bring home the first championship in his franchise’s history.




So there’s some conflict. Maybe we can get a couple bench-clearers out of it, or another late-game grand slam.


It’s not ideal, but I’ll make the most of it.

Cincinnati Bengals Trade Carson Palmer to Oakland Raiders: Who Wins Out?

The only real significant news at the NFL trade deadline this year involved the Oakland Raiders’ move to replace injured quarterback Jason Campbell with the Cincinnati Bengals’ former first overall pick Carson Palmer.


The trade says a few things about the three major parties involved: the Raiders are serious about pushing for a Super Bowl run this year, and the Bengals and Palmer each played their cards right in a tough situation.


With fans happy on either side of the country, the only thing left to consider is who will be happiest.


Cincinnati Bengals


Probably the biggest beneficiaries of the deal, the Bengals got potentially two first-round draft picks (the second is conditional) in exchange for a 32 year-old quarterback who has been on a steady decline and currently refuses to play. So, effectively, the Bengals have the opportunity to get two additional elite players in exchange for a guy who was showing signs that he was washed up, and very obviously didn’t want to play for them.


With this turnout, it looks like Bengals owner Mike Brown slow played the entire NFL. Previously, he was criticized for holding onto the ace up his sleeve. When Palmer first made his frustrations public, and requested a trade, analysts called him stubborn. Even today, after making the trade, Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel called Brown still “the most obstinate owner in the NFL,” and the decision “stunning."


Brown gave off that image, but maybe it was all just a part of his hustle.


Wetzel cites Brown’s comments this summer, when he said he just wanted Palmer to honor his agreement rather than leave town because the team was bad:


“Carson signed a contract; he made a commitment,” Brown said. “If he is going to walk away from his commitment, we aren’t going to reward him for doing it.” 


That was his story then. But maybe, just maybe, Brown was actually playing us the whole time. The odds that a marquee NFL team was going to lose a starting quarterback were pretty high going into the season. It already happened with the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins, but each is waiting for a better situation to come along (the Colts counting the minutes until Manning comes back, the Dolphins holding out for Andrew Luck). Throw in the market of teams who would need new quarterbacks after their own played too poorly to hold onto a starting position (Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins), and the Bengals were holding onto a stock that would only get more valuable.


Except it worked out so much better than the Bengals could have hoped for. The Raiders have one legitimate starting quarterback on their team, and a strong enough record (4-2) in a weak-enough division (San Diego is their only real competitor in an AFC West boasting a combined 11-10 record) to be convinced they might have a chance for the Super Bowl.


With a former first overall pick sitting on their bench, and a market for a starting quarterback that strong, the Bengals probably could have named their own price. And they kind of did. 


Oakland Raiders


A lot of people think the Raiders gave up too much for Carson Palmer, sending two first-round picks for an aging quarterback in a year when they’ve already given away their first four draft picks.


But the Raiders draft situation may be a little better than a lot of people had thought. Because the Raiders lost marquee free agents Nnamdi Asomugha and Robert Gallery this past year, an NFL rule will grant them some compensation draft picks (one of many programs designed to maintain parity in the league). They’re also in contention for a third compensation draft pick after losing tight end Zach Miller to the Seattle Seahawks. Similar to the draft process, the compensation pick program tries to set up the teams who lost the most, with what ESPN’s Bill Williamson called “a complicated formula based on play time and performance.” That means that, based on how Asomugha, Gallery and Williams play through the rest of the season, the Raiders could potentially receive three third-round draft picks. Their 2012 draft situation will definitely be worse than it was before the trade, but it won’t be as bad as it seems on the surface.


Either way, the draft isn’t really what the Raiders are focused on. The trade sent one message - this is the year the Raiders want to win. They have some good pieces already (Darren McFadden), and with a consistent quarterback could give the rest of the league hell. They did it Week 3 against the Jets. Why not in the playoffs?


In the trade for Palmer, the Raiders aren’t just slapping a bandaid on an injury, they’re getting a prosthetic arm. Although Palmer has been on the decline in the past few years, his performance has remained pretty steady with Jason Campbell’s. Palmer’s career quarterback rating (86.9) is four points higher than Campell’s. And although he does have twice as many interceptions in his career, he also has twice as many touchdowns with just two more years in the leauge. Most of that is due to the pass-first-run-never offensive strategy of Palmer’s former Bengals teams. In Oakland, he can let McFadden take the lead, let Michael Bush score the touchdowns, and occasionally bail them out on an occasional third down. Combine Palmer’s affinity for the deep ball, Darrius Heyward-Bey’s speed and the big-play threat of McFadden drawing safeties into the box, the Raiders offense might eventually be better off.


The Raiders are going all in on 2011, and making the sudden turn from starting Kyle Boller to starting Carson Palmer could help them win that bet.


Carson Palmer


Whereas the Bengals’ Mike Brown looked smart in the way he played the Raiders for two first-round draft picks, Palmer was the luckiest out of every party involved in the deal.


As everyone knows, he’s originally from the West Coast, and his family still lives there. He’s even been working out over there since he started holding out. Now, he gets paid to work out there.


Then there’s the fact that the Raiders are in a better situation. Sure, the Bengals are 4-2, and they suddenly have a good defense. But no one expected them to win four out of their first six games, especially a year after they won four games out of their first 16 just a year ago. And even after a good start, no one outside the Bengals locker room expects this hot streak to continue, especially for a team that looked weak against the win-less Indianapolis Colts and has to play the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers twice each. Instead, he moves to a Raiders team in a much weaker AFC West.


Jason Campbell 


Every stick has a shit end, and that’s the one Jason Campbell is holding. This guy can’t catch a break.


He’s not a bad quarterback, at least not by a long shot. He just continues to get trapped in bad situations. He thought his luck took a turn when he departed Washington for Oakland, and he started playing like it too. He no longer had to be the man, because McFadden was going to, and he suddenly wasn’t throwing 15 interceptions per year. Things we’re starting to look up for Jason Campbell, until his first real successful season got cut short.


As painful as a collarbone injury is, it’ll probably be more painful for Jason Campbell to watch Carson Palmer win his games.
