NFL Week 7: Tips for Struggling Fantasy Football Teams

Here comes Week 7. We’re deep into the bye weeks, which were invented to make you hate yourself for drafting four guys on the same team, and the season’s been going on long enough for at least one of your top three picks to get injured.


It’s time to make moves.


The bye week stuff started about two weeks ago, and, if you’re like me, you got screwed. You didn’t consider weeks five and six when you drafted Tony Romo, Ray Rice, Larry Fitzgerald or Antonio Gates (each on a bye in one of the last two weeks). So now you’re two games down, and it’s all because you got unlucky with bye weeks and injuries.


But not this week. This time, you were smart. While everyone was chirping about the Carson Palmer trade, you took advantage of the one that flew under the radar and would make a big fantasy football impact right away - Ronnie Brown to the Detroit Lions. This deal was a fantasy football godsend - in most leagues, Brown either went undrafted or had been cut by someone on your team who, like everyone else, didn’t expect him to go another team. Now he’s on a team coping with a concussed starting running back who desperately needs a goal-line option when Calvin Johnson gets quadruple-teamed. Brown on the Lions was like a gift handed to you, the smart fantasy football bro, who snatched him up quick-fast while everyone else was blogging about whether or not the Raiders should have given up first-round picks for Carson Palmer.


Then you heard the news: the trade didn’t go through. Jerome Harrison just screwed you.


Back to the drawing board.


Here are your options depending on your current situation, followed by the guys you shouldn’t keep on the bench this week.


Patchwork


A couple guys on your team are out, either on bye weeks or injury, but you did the research and you can patch it up before anyone else gets the good crop. Here’s who’s on your plate:


Jackie Battle, RB, Kansas City Chiefs - The Ronnie Brown situation screwed you, but you might get lucky with Jackie Battle. He suddenly became relevant around the time Jamal Charles’ knee gave out, and then became the man when Thomas Jones’ age ran out. When the only other backfield option in Kansas City is just a glorified wide receiver - Dexter McCluster can’t carry the ball all game - a team with a mediocre pass game suddenly turned to this guy. It worked two weeks ago, when Battle racked up 119 yards on 19 carries. That does mean someone else might have beaten you to it, but if you can still get in there then you could be kicking yourself if you pass it up.


Demarco Murray, RB, Dallas Cowboys - A poor man’s Jackie Battle, he’s in the same situation in Dallas. The former highly touted prospect had just 32 yards against New England last week, but with the Cowboys traveling to a weak St. Louis Rams defense without Felix Jones, he could become this week’s breakout. Oh, and I almost forgot: Tashard Choice.


 Earnest Graham, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers - LeGarrette Blount is still hurt, and Graham took advantage of that last week, to the tune of 109 yards on 17 carries. Considering how successful Josh Freeman was on the play-action pass last week, the Buccaneers could go to Graham early on Sunday to establish a similar dynamic. That makes for a good opportunity.


Salvageable


You missed out on the top pickups, but you might be able to make some moves.


Tim Tebow, QB, Denver Broncos - Worth a shot, right? He’s definitely not worthy of the ridiculous rating ESPN gave him - at number freaking nine going into Week 7 - nor the hype he’s gotten everywhere else. His throwing arm sucks, and he’s an interception risk. He also has very few receiving options. But he’s good for some rushing yards, maybe even a rushing touchdown or two. I also realize this could bite me in the ass, but I don’t care. Right now, I don’t believe in him to hold onto the ball consistently.


Carson Palmer, QB, Oakland Raiders - He’s definitely starting, and McFadden will probably capture most of the attention of the Chiefs defense. That could open up some play action opportunities to his quick, young receiver corps, which leads to our next pick.


Denarius Moore, WR, Oakland Raiders - He started off hot, and became a commodity on the waiver wire after his 146-yard, touchdown-scoring breakout in Week 2. Since then, he’s basically been dropped by everybody who jumped on his early bandwagon. That’s good news for you too, depending on how desperate you are. If you’re risky enough to ignore the projections, keep in mind that the Chiefs secondary will most likely key on Darrius Heyward-Bey, as they’ll be afraid of a Palmer-to-Ochocinco-esque homerun out of the new duo. That’ll open up some opportunities for Moore, making him a decent option at the flex spot.


Desperate 


Sunday morning. 11:30 a.m. You just rolled out of bed, hungover and miserable, and you suddenly remember you have a fantasy football team. Time to throw something together.


Mike Sims-Walker, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars - Another fresh-off-the-presses pick, Sims-Walker goes back to Jacksonville. Leaving a situation in St. Louis that clearly just didn’t work out, Sims-Walker goes back to the town where he had seven touchdowns in each of his previous two seasons. Still, none of that changes the fact that Blaine Gabbert is the one throwing the ball, so proceed with caution


Christian Ponder, QB, Minnesota Vikings - It remains to be seen whether he’ll be better than Donovan McNabb, but there’s no way he could really be worse. I don’t recommend it, but if you’re at this point you might not have any other choice. 


John Beck, QB, Washington Redskins - See: Christian Ponder (substitute Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman). 


Starts: Think Twice Before Benching Them


Pierre Thomas, RB, New Orleans Saints - He’s been unpredictable enough to get himself dropped, picked up and traded on a weekly basis. But this week the Indianapolis Colts bring their 30th-ranked rush defense to town. Everyone’s high on To give some perspective, the Colts have given up 100-yard games to Ben Tate, Jackie Battle and LeGarrette Blount this season. Thomas should do alright if he gets the ball. (I should add, that’s a really big ‘if.’ The Saints like Mark Ingram a lot, so this could be shaky).


Colt McCoy, QB, Cleveland Browns - He’s been perfectly consistent this season, throwing just 3 interceptions on the season, a surprisingly low number for a young quarterback. Throw in the fact that Montario Hardesty takes over in the backfield to provide a significantly better passing option on the flats than the clunky Peyton Hillis, and McCoy becomes a low-risk option with big-play potential against a porous Seattle Seahawks pass defense (ranked 23rd in the league).


Arrelious Benn, WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers  - Josh Freeman is hot, coming off a surprise gunshow against the Saints. He’s got to get the ball to someone, and Mike Williams and Kellen Winslow just haven’t been getting it done. Maybe he’ll learn this week and stop throwing to Williams, who ranks fourth in the league in dropped passes. Benn could pick up where Williams left off last season.
